4 Generations of FunTeam
FunTeam Drumheller Hockey
Drumheller FunTeam Hockey will celebrate its 25th Anniversary this coming October. 25 years! The success of this amazing group is due to the hard work and dedication of Nicky Sereda and the sacrifice his family has made to keep this FunTeam group rooted in FunTeam principles and provide this opportunity to other families in Drumheller. He understood a need in his community that minor sport couldn’t meet and in 1994 the Drumheller FunTeam Hockey was established to provide a place for players of all skill levels to learn and play a game they loved, limited the amount of travel out of town and focused on family involvement.
It’s been 25 years of dedication, family sacrifice & a lot of great volunteers who have made Drumheller FunTeam Hockey Club what it is today. Former players have continued to be a part of the program in Drumheller, volunteering, eventually becoming parents themselves and including their kids in the FunTeam experience. This is how impactful this group has been to the town and we want to recognize the continued work that every family puts in to making Drumheller FunTeam Hockey as amazing as it is today.
Pictured left is Nicky (FunTeam jersey) Nicky’s father Nick Sr. (right), son Nicholas (Nick) (left) and his two boys Nate and Fraser (sitting) at the annual Heritage Classic Games from this past season at the local Midland Outdoor Community Rink.
Nick Sr. was the one who introduced Nicky to the sport’s world on the little league diamond and has always been there as a mentor and a supporter of his efforts. Along with his wife, Olga, of 64 years, they have supported Drumheller FunTeam since day 1. Nick Sr. has been supportive in helping with youth and sport in his community for over 60+ years including the last 31 years looking after the Midland Outdoor Community Rink. In an effort to curb vandalism, he has taken on the responsibility to lock up each evening and open the skate shack each morning from November to March and has done so for 21 years. Nick Sr. has unselfishly given his time to do his part for this community outdoor facility.
Thanks to his selfless efforts three generations of community families have enjoyed the use of the outdoor facility under his care. As well for the past 14 seasons it has been the home of Drumheller FunTeam’s annual Heritage Classic Outdoor Games!
Nicholas (Nick) was a member of the very first Drumheller FunTeam Hockey team and played until he left for college in the fall of 2001. Four years ago he returned with his son Nate and has been volunteering helping coach the Rookies ever since. Nate has played Rookie FunTeam for 4 seasons & Fraser just completed his second season!
The theme of Drumheller FunTeam hockey is: “Everyone’s a Winner”. It is about our youth being able to enjoy a healthy activity in a safe environment where regardless of skill and ability, they feel comfortable learning a sport and don’t have to worry about the pressure of winning. They have an opportunity to grow and improve at a rate comfortable to them and in a positive environment. They learn respect, sportsmanship, citizenship and about giving back to their community.
One of FunTeam Alberta’s principles is that our programming should be family-oriented. You are looking at the perfect representation of that right here.
