Meyokumin Elementary School
Young Leaders Program
Completing our Young Leader's Program awards Schools a $1000 honorarium. I can be used towards improving their school programming however they see fit when a group of students take on a leadership role for 8 weeks by planning and executing a recreation program for their fellow students.
Meyokumin Elementary School in Millwoods ran their first Young Leaders Program in the fall of 2017. They ran a soccer intramural program at lunch time. The Grade 5 Young Leaders would organize the program and officiate the games to make sure all the particpants were playing by the rules, having fun, and following the FunTeam Alberta principles.
The School used their honorarium to host a 2 day in-service participating in Zumba and POUND classes. They wanted to share some of the feedback of the inservice and what the honorarium was able to do for thier students:
"I have a boy in my class who struggles in gym. He is unable to do a lot of the activities that we have done this year and he is self-conscious about his abilities. He loved POUND. It was so much fun to watch him hitting the sticks and exercising with his classmates. He didn't have time to feel self-conscious because he was too busy smiling, laughing, and following the moves.
One of our grade 5 teachers told me a similar story about a girl in his class. She is a quieter girl and Phys. Ed is not always her favourite subject. She also really got into POUND. She turned into a total warrior and was slamming the sticks and yelling loudly. It was neat to see another side to her. She told her teacher afterwards how she'd really loved it.
Yesterday we did Zumba. I popped in to watch the grade 6's. All 3 classes were having a total dance party! They were singing, laughing, and dancing so hard. They were exhausted afterwards, but they loved it.
I really want to thank you and everyone at Fun Team Alberta for this experience. This is not the type of thing many of my students would usually get to experience. It has been such a positive experience and we are hoping to repeat it in the future."
Thank you to Maureen for sharing this story and Mentor Teacher Angelene for bringing our programming into Meyokumin Elementary School during your practicum.
